2025 International Transport Forum Summit + April Meet & Greet Recording!
Popular Transport NDC Template & New Two- and Three-Wheeler Explainer Releases with Uber!
Hello pop transport folks! We are happy to have you back in this new edition of events, news, and resources for popular transport. Let’s kick off this edition with some announcements on the Two- and Three-Wheeler Explainer Series authored by GNPT and Uber!
New Language Releases for 2&3W Explainers
GNPT is proud to release Spanish, Portuguese, and French versions of our explainer series on two- and three-wheelers, developed with support from Uber. This series breaks down key issues shaping the sector—including economics, safety, electrification, and equity—to help policymakers, researchers, and advocates better understand the role of popular transport in urban mobility systems. By offering these resources in multiple languages, we aim to support more inclusive conversations and informed action across the regions where these modes are most essential. You can find all explainer versions here!
Template for Reaching Nationally Declared Contributions (NDCs) with Popular Transport
At the “Raising Ambition for Transport in NDCs 3.0” Workshop—organized by GIZ, PATH, GNPT, ITF, SLOCAT, UIC, and UITP—GNPT’s Executive Director Andrea San Gil León shared a summary of its template for guiding governments in integrating popular transport into their climate commitments. The presentation emphasized the value of informal modes like motorcycle taxis and rickshaws in achieving equitable, low-emission transport systems, urging a shift away from standardized approaches toward context-specific strategies that recognize the lived realities and contributions of the Global South. You can find the full Popular Transport NDC template here!
International Transport Forum 2025 Summit
GNPT is heading to Leipzig! From May 21–23, the International Transport Forum 2025 Summit will bring together ministers, global transport leaders, and researchers under the theme Transport Resilience to Global Shocks. We’re thrilled to share that Jacqueline Klopp of PRISM, GNPT CEO Benjamin de la Peña, and GNPT Executive Director Andrea San Gil León will all be speaking at this year’s Summit. GNPT also plans to host a panel and media day during the event—full schedule to be released in the lead-up to the event!
As we prepare, we’d love to hear from others working in or alongside the popular transport sector. Are you planning to attend? Interested in collaborating or connecting around informal transport, resilience, or low-carbon mobility? Reach out—we’d be glad to talk!
April Meet & Greet Recording: Safety & Security
Thank you to everyone who joined GNPT and PRISM for our recent virtual meet-and-greet on safety and security in popular transport. The session brought together a rich exchange of research, lived experiences, and policy perspectives that deepened our collective understanding of informal transport systems—especially motorcycle taxis and rickshaws—in cities like Bogotá and Kampala.
From discussions led by Dr. Luis Guzman, María José Nieto, and Tom Courtright, it became clear that these transport modes are not just stopgaps but essential lifelines in urban mobility, particularly for underserved communities. Speakers highlighted how issues of safety extend far beyond infrastructure—touching on gendered mobility patterns, the emotional dimensions of trust, and systemic concerns such as police corruption. We heard how women and other vulnerable populations navigate these challenges daily, often relying on informal transport precisely because formal systems do not meet their needs.
Participants explored how research and lived experience must inform policy, with a strong call to move away from criminalization and toward inclusive regulation that recognizes the legitimacy and value of popular transport. The conversation also touched on the emerging role of digital platforms, reminding us that technology must be designed with users in mind—supporting safety, dignity, and livelihood, rather than reinforcing inequities. Watch the meet-and-greet’s full recording on our Youtube channel linked here!
Whether or not you were able to join us on April 10, you can keep up with all of our meet-and-greets this year with our 2025 schedule. We’ll be announcing the exact date of each webinar here and on our social media, so make sure to follow us and keep an eye out for these events!
That is it for this month! As always, send us information about happenings, new data, and cool insights to info.gnpt@sharedusemobilitycenter.org.
Take care!
